trophic cascade

Dave asked everyone to play the game “Trophic Cascade”; there are a few different variations of this game – sometimes he asks you to write your own definition of “trophic cascade”, other times he asks you to write a sentence that includes the phrase “trophic cascade”. In another version of the game the audience were asked to describe the image (right).

Dave explains that “Trophic cascades occur when predators in a food web suppress the abundance and/or alter traits (e.g., behavior) of their prey, thereby releasing the next lower trophic level from predation” (Wikipedia). He then tells the story of Macquarie Island, a sub-Antarctic Island that has suffered a trophic cascade, thanks to human intervention.
